Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

RGRHBR403 - Handle and care for breeding stallions

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare to handle stallions

  1. Identify work hazards, assess risks and implement suitable controls for activities involving stallions
  2. Confirm the work program with management
  3. Communicate with other workers to ensure smooth operation of the mating process
  4. Research known behaviour of individual stallions to be handled, and advise others of any specific risks
  5. Ensure workers involved with activities have the skills needed to safely handle stallions
  6. Select, check and maintain tools and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE) used for safety and hygiene purposes

Care for stallions

  1. Observe body language and behaviour of stallions before handling, and assess safety risks
  2. Catch, groom and exercise stallions using safe horse handling techniques to maintain fitness and monitor for condition and general health
  3. Parade stallion for prospective breeders to select according to workplace practices
  4. Conduct checks and observe, identify and record changes in stallion behaviour and health
  5. Comply with prescribed nutritional programs, and complete records
  6. Monitor work hazards, assess risks and implement suitable controls on an ongoing basis
  7. Maintain prescribed horse health routines throughout and between breeding seasons
